Spring Break is finally here! I've been waiting to go to Guyana, South America for months and now it's time.

We had to be at Dr. Scott Hodge's by 8:30 am. Everything was packed, I just needed to take my last long, hot shower for a while.

When I got to the office, most of the girls were already there. We loaded up into a 15 passenger van and regular van that pulled a trailer. the trailer had all our dental suitcases. We were only allowed to bring one carry-on and a backpack. It actually fit well and I didn't need more room- I even had extra space.

We drove to Ann Arbor to pick up the Michigan Dental students and Ashley because she stayed with her sister who lives there. The drive went by quickly because we were all talking a lot.

Then we drove from Ann Arbor to Detroit's airport. It was exciting to drive up and see all the planes.

We unloaded our suitcases and waited and waited in the lobby area while we were getting our bags checked in. After a few hours we were able to go through security. For security we took off our shoes and put them in a bucket, put our liquid containers in the bucket, and put our carry-ons on the conveyor belt. Someone scanned these items while we walked through another scanner. Once we were all through, we left our luggage with a leader and we were able to get something to eat.

Ashley, Katie, and I went together. Katie got Quiznos, Ashley got Hungry Howie's, and I got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from PB & J. It was $7 and I was still hungry, so I got a piece of pizza. Airport food is so expensive.

After eating it was about time to board our first flight to New York. The line was moving quickly. I had an aisle seat next to Javana, a dental student from Michigan. Javana sat next to Hanah who had the window seat. For the ride we talked and napped. The flight was about 2 1/2 hours. By the time we arrived in New York, the sun was just starting to set, so there were pretty colors and we were still able to see the tall buildings including the Empire State Building.

We all got off the plane, found a secluded spot to put our luggage, had people watch our luggage, and we explored. It felt like we were in a mall with all the shops and food places. Ashley and I walked around and looked at random stores. While we were in a New York souvenir store, we met a lady from Guyana named Mary. She was interesting to talk to. She was telling a little bit about what it's like there and we were telling her why were going. Her two front teeth had a half moon shape of missing enamel on her biting surface. We later found out that this is kinda common in Guyana. People break chicken bones in half and then put the bones between their front teeth and suck out the sweet bone marrow. The bone causes their teeth to form like this.

We continued to shop not really looking for anything. We got dinner at a soup place. I got broccoli cheddar. Then we found our luggage pile and ate there. After I ate I called my parents to talk for a little bit. then a group of us (Andrea, Jeanna, Amy J., Dr. Greg, and I) played the card game golf and I ended up winning. Afterward Dr. Greg told us some of the history of Guyana and what to expect.

It was just about time to board the flight to Guyana. I was hoping to not be towards the back again like the first flight. It was way too loud. Luckily, I was in the middle. I sat next to Katie and Pauline, a dental assistant. Pauline had the window seat. Our flight started at 1:05 am and was about 7 1/2 hours. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't get motion sickness and that I could sleep, so I took some Dramamine. It worked well, and I slept the entire flight. I remember waking up here and there, but other than that, I was out. About 4:30 am, they brought us hot ham and cheese sandwiches, which I liked better than the salty peanuts on the first flight. I had a hard time staying awake to eat it. After a few more hours we had to make a quick stop in Trinidad. In about an hour, we would be in Guyana.
